    This protocol explains how to: use the the pulling machine to pull pipettes or needles.

    1. Place long pipette (or glass filament, if you're pulling needles) in top clamp and position so that the wire coil hits the pipette where you want it pulled.
    2. Pull up bottom clamp as far as it will go and tighten.
    3. Set Heat #1 and Pull numbers (see side of machine for "recipes" or just experiment until you find a combination you like).
    4. Turn machine on and hit "pull" button.
    5. When finished, carefully remove pipette -- glass can be HOT and still look the same! Turn machine off.

    For pulling pipettes by hand (with the bunsen burner):

    Hold both ends and place the thin part of the pipette in the tip of the flame. I had the most success when I rotated it so all sides heated evenly and pulled once the heated section became soft. I began pulling the ends apart at the same time that I began pulling it out of the flame. The complete motion looks more like a 'V' than a 'Y'.

    The needles will be more pointed and with thinner tips the higher the heat and the higher the pull settings.
